How often does a backflow device need testing in NSW?

Sydney Water requires high and medium hazard containment devices to be tested when they are installed and every year afterwards. The accredited plumber must lodge the result with Sydney Water within two days of the test. Low hazard connections generally use non-testable devices and have no annual test.

Who is responsible for backflow testing in a strata building?

The containment device sits on the property's connection to the Sydney Water main, which is almost always common property, so the owners corporation is normally responsible for testing it. Individual lot owners are not usually billed directly. Check the strata plan and the Common Property Memorandum if the boundary is disputed.

What are the different types of backflow prevention devices and which one do I need?

The main types are Reduced Pressure Zone Devices (RPZD), Double Check Valve Assemblies (DCVA or DCV), Pressure Vacuum Breakers (PVB), Atmospheric Vacuum Breakers (AVB) and Dual Check Valves. We notify you of the outcome and the required action before we do anything, so you are never charged for work you have not approved.

How much does backflow testing cost in Sydney?

Backflow testing cost in Sydney is charged per device, not per property, so a site with four devices costs roughly four times a site with one. The test itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes per device. Repairs, replacement parts and a re-test are billed separately if the device fails.
