A rainwater pump that stops supplying water does not automatically need replacing. Record what happens when a connected outlet is used: whether the motor starts, whether water arrives, and whether the pump stops afterwards. These observations help the technician narrow down the fault.
The motor runs but water does not arrive
Possible causes include insufficient water in the tank, a closed supply valve, air entering the suction line or a system that has lost prime. Check the model-specific instructions. Avoid running a pump without water or opening a hot or pressurised pump.
The pump repeatedly starts and stops
Frequent cycling can be associated with pressure-tank settings, a leaking outlet or a valve that is not holding. Tell the technician whether it happens with all outlets closed or only while using water. Pressure adjustments and repairs need to suit the particular system.
The pump will not start or keeps running
A start failure can involve the power supply, motor or pump mechanism. On an automatic rainwater changeover system, water levels and supply arrangements also matter. Continuous running may indicate ongoing water use or a leak. The timing of the symptom alone does not establish which component has failed.
When electrical assessment is needed
Do not open electrical enclosures or repeatedly reset a tripping safety switch. Keep clear of wet electrical equipment. Electrical wiring work in NSW requires the relevant electrical licence or certificate; a plumbing qualification should not be assumed to cover electrical fault finding.
