Backflow Prevention Sutherland Shire
Need help with backflow prevention? EKORP services Sutherland Shire. Call to discuss the property, the work and current availability.
Where’s the job?
Backflow prevention in the Sutherland Shire deals with two very different environments. Ocean-facing homes from Cronulla to Caringbah South see accelerated brass valve wear from open-coast salt air, while bushland blocks around Engadine, Heathcote and the Royal National Park boundary face bushfire-zone pressure demands and debris intrusion from tree roots.
EKORP Plumbing is based at Bayside Plaza, Brighton-Le-Sands NSW 2216 and services Sydney's south.
Shire backflow risks, coast to bush
On the coast, salt air degrades valve components year-round, so devices in Cronulla and Caringbah South need closer watching than the test cycle alone. Inland, boosted irrigation on the larger Bangor and Menai blocks creates back-pressure risk, and bushfire-prone properties around Heathcote and Engadine are exposed to the sharp pressure swings that firefighting draw puts through the network.
- Salt-air wear on ocean-facing valve components
- Boosted irrigation on larger Bangor and Menai blocks
- Firefighting pressure swings near the Royal National Park
- Pool fill and irrigation risers without protection
Testing and certificates across the Shire
Annual testing is a legal requirement on most devices: valves inspected, pressure measured, and the Sydney Water compliance certificate issued the same day. Device failures and urgent compliance deadlines get prompt service; call early and we will aim for that morning.
Coverage runs the full Shire: Cronulla, Caringbah, Miranda, Sutherland, Engadine, Heathcote, Gymea, Kirrawee, Menai, Bangor, Como and Jannali.
Who needs a device in the Shire
Mains-connected irrigation on the Shire's larger residential blocks generally needs at least a dual check valve or pressure vacuum breaker at the connection point. Pool top-up systems and fire hose reels add requirements of their own, and Caringbah's industrial sites commonly carry medium-hazard double check valves on their service connections. We assess the actual hazard on site and specify the device class from there.
Repairs without the return trip
A failed device is repaired or replaced that day wherever possible. Vans carry parts for the common device types, so most Shire repairs finish in one visit, with the device re-tested and certified before we leave. The 24/7 line answers every hour of the night, and after-hours rates are confirmed by phone before we dispatch.

Questions
Common questions about backflow prevention.
Here are clear answers to common questions. Call us if you need help with something else.
How do I know if my property requires backflow prevention devices?
Properties that require backflow prevention include those with in-ground irrigation systems connected to mains water, fire sprinkler or hose reel systems, swimming pools with mains top-up connections, commercial equipment such as dishwashers or cooling towers, and any connection involving chemicals or non-potable water. If you are unsure, we can conduct a risk assessment to determine exactly what your property needs. Sydney Water may also have placed a requirement notice on the property title if a backflow device was required at a previous stage.
How often should backflow testing be performed?
For most installed backflow prevention devices, annual testing is a mandatory requirement under Sydney Water's guidelines and NSW plumbing regulations. The exact frequency can vary depending on the device class and the hazard level of the connection, but annual as a minimum is the standard for RPZD, DCV and DCDA devices. Some high-hazard industrial installations may require more frequent testing. After each test, a signed certificate must be submitted to the relevant water authority.
What happens during a backflow testing appointment?
Our certified plumber isolates the backflow device and connects calibrated differential pressure test equipment to the test cocks on the device. We check that each valve opens and closes correctly, measure the pressure differential across the device to confirm it meets the required minimum, and verify that any relief valves operate as designed. Emergency arrival times depend on location, traffic and plumber availability. We will give you an estimated arrival window when you call. You receive a signed test report at the end, which you can submit to Sydney Water or retain for council compliance.
What happens if my backflow device fails the test?
A failed device has to be repaired or replaced and then re-tested before a passing report can be lodged. Common causes are worn check valve seats, debris on the seal and a faulty relief valve. Sydney Water can restrict or disconnect the water supply where a device is not brought back into compliance.
